German Sword of Justice

  • Dated: circa 1740
  • Measurements: length ~ 110cm/43.3 inches
  • Provenance: Historic Collections of the Dukes of Brunswick successively at Schloss Cumberland, Schloss Blankenburg and Schloss Marienburg

With iron hilt of cruciform style comprising fluted pommel and bold quillons with long shagreen covered wood grip with bronze turk’s heads.  The broad double-edged blade with rounded tip with traces of an inlaid maker’s mark.  Retaining its original leather covered wooden scabbard.

Swords of this form, known as ‘Executioners Swords’ were not as popularly thought used for execution but were carried upright before a Lord or a Prince as a symbol of his power as a lawgiver.
